Pegasus Spyware: Everything You Need To Know

What is Pegasus?

Pegasus is a spyware program created by the Israeli cyber arms firm NSO (It stands for its Founders' names; Niv, Shalev, and Omri) Group that can be installed secretly on phones running most versions of iOS and Android. According to the 2021 Project Pegasus leaks, the current Pegasus software can exploit all recent iOS versions up to iOS 14.6. Pegasus can read text messages, track calls, collect passwords, track location, access the target device's microphone and camera, and harvest information from apps. The spyware is named after the mythical winged horse Pegasus, and it is a Trojan horse that can infect phones by "flying through the air."

When was Pegasus spyware first discovered?

In 2016, Pegasus spyware was discovered in an iOS version, followed by a slightly different version on Android. One of the main infection schemes in the early days, according to Kaspersky, was via SMS. An SMS with a link was sent to the victim. If the user clicks on it, the spyware is installed on their Mobile Phone.

How does Pegasus target your phones?

Pegasus takes advantage of software flaws known as zero-day vulnerabilities, which have yet to be patched. Pegasus used to reach people's smartphones through a link that they had to physically click on. Because of the flaw of the so-called zero-click attack, spyware can now infect your phone without you having to interact with it. It's possible that this is a WhatsApp call that you didn't have to answer.

Is My Phone Infected With Pegasus? How To Check?

At least 50 thousand devices have been infected worldwide, according to information security experts. This number may not seem alarming, but Pegasus is extremely dangerous: it allows you to take complete control of your smartphone, read your emails in secret, listen in on phone calls, and view photos and videos. Pegasus is undetectable by most antivirus programs because it exploits zero-day vulnerabilities that are unknown to operating systems and antivirus software developers.

Amnesty International, a human rights organization, has created a tool that can help you identify this malware. MVT (Mobile Verification Toolkit) is the name of the project, and the source code of MVT is available on GitHub. While the MVT application is compatible with both Android and iOS, there are currently no ready-made solutions for quick installation. Computers running either Linux or macOS are the only ones capable of compiling them for specific devices.

This software program saves a backup replica of all data from the phone to the computer, scans all data and exams if the device/phone is infected with the Pegasus spyware, and informs the person if information from his phone might be compromised and transferred to third parties.

How to stay safe from Pegasus?

There isn't any current solution for the zero-day attack. However, If you follow the given simple steps you can take to reduce your risk of being hacked not just by Pegasus, but also by other malicious attacks.
  1. Ensure that all relevant patches and upgrades are installed on your device.
  2. Only click on links from people and sources you are familiar with and believe in.
  3. When accessing sensitive information, stay away from the public and free WiFi.
  4. Encrypt your device's data and, if available, use remote wipe features.
